Source: Daily Prothom Alo Date: April 30, 2007 Name of victim: Momela Location: Gazipur Fact: A young woman had to leave her house under pressure of Fatwabaz Overview of Fact: A young woman named Momela of a poor family from village Laghalia, Gazipur, used to cook for workers of a poultry farm. During this time she developed intimacy with a worker named Bikash of that farm, consequently she became pregnant. Moreover on March 7, 2007 she gave birth to a boy. The influential Fatwabaz of village called on a number of shalish on the basis of incident. Neverthless the shalish did not work out, as the farm worker Bikash was absent in the shalish. On 7th April 07 some Fatwabaz went to Momela’s house and ordered them not to get out of their house anymore and mix with any one of the area as they were spoiling social values of the village. As a result of this decision Momela’s family became jobless and isolated from the village, moreover, the family was starving for long time and no one came to help them. In this situation Momela finally decided to leave the village for good in order to release her family from this inhuman sufferings. |

BNWLA has been established to provide legal support and assistance to the underprivileged, victimized and vulnerable women and children of the society by a group of women lawyers. The Legal Support Service is the largest support service of BNWLA and as of now this service is provided by more than fifty competent and experienced lawyers. The legal support works through thirty clinics all over the country. The clinic addresses the legal problems of the victimized and destitute women and children, who are vulnerable, abused and violated. BNWLA provides this service free of cost and in addition provides legal support to help these women and children to establish their rights in the society. This unit has been providing legal assistance to the advantaged and abused women and children through legal counseling, mediation, arbitration and litigation services. It helps to increase awareness among women and children so that they can protect themselves against all forms of abuse and exploitations. BNWLA has members in different parts of the country with the following services.

This involves various legal support services to the survivors of different forms of abuse. Services include: filing and conducting cases in different courts such as the Magistrates' Courts, District and Session Courts, Family Courts and the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. BNWLA provides these services to the survivors who are socially disadvantaged, distressed, deprived, exploited, sexually or physically abused and trafficked within or beyond the country. With the support from other cells BNWLA provides direct support to these survivors along with awareness raising and skill training. |
